7th Grade Boys Basketball Take 1st at Pearsall Tournament

The Lytle Pirates 7th grade basketball team traveled to Pearsall Saturday January 7, 2017 to participate in a tournament. This was their first tournament of the season so to say they were excited would be an understatement.

Their first opponent was a tough Cotulla team. The Pirates played excellent defense holding Cotulla to one point in the first half. Unfortunately the Pirates had a bit of trouble hitting open shots but still lead at the half 8-1. Cotulla tried to get back into the game scoring 6 points in the fourth quarter but the Pirates held strong. Lytle defeated Cotulla in their first game of the tournament 14-7.

The Lytle Pirates advanced to the tournament title game where they once again faced the Pearsall Dogies. The Dogies were looking to beat Lytle for the first time this season. The Pirates started strong scoring 11 in the first quarter after scoring only 14 points in the previous game. Pearsall responded with a 9 point second quarter and a 17-15 half time lead. Pearsall once again had a great quarter scoring 8 points and leading Lytle 25-20 after the third.

The Pirates clawed their way back into the game one play at a time. They locked down the Dogies holding them to 3 points in the fourth quarter while scoring 13 themselves. Once again the Pirates persevered and defeated the Dogies 33-28. The Pirates were lead by Daniel Aguirre with 10 points followed by Bubba Solis (7) and Joe Cortez (5).

The 7th Grade boys basketball team placed 1st at the 2017 Pearsall tournament.

Calling All Lytle Business Community Members!

We would like to invite you to participate in the LJH Playbook initiative where business community members visit our school and speak with our students.

The initial goal of this partnership is to have business community members share with our students how education has impacted, influenced, and/or benefited their business/career.   Consequently, LJH hopes to build a mentor program between business community members and its students.

LJH has a scheduled time period (11:42am – 12:12pm) called Playbook.  It is during this designated time that business community members would be scheduled to speak.  It is our hope that following these visits, a mentor program can be developed between the members and our students based on interest and opportunity.

If you would be interested in participating in our Playbook Initiative, please send an email to Kenneth Dykes (kdykes@lytleisd.com) and/or Amanda Lopez (alopez@lytleisd.com).

Thank you,                                                                                                                    Kenneth O. Dykes                                                                                                               Lytle Junior High Principal

7th Grade Girl's Basketball

Last night the Lady Pirates hosted the Lady Eagles. We are a team with eager and willing minds and limited skill and knowledge of the sport but have great big hearts! Unfortunately we could not overcome the height and the experience Pleasanton had and didn't come out with the "W". These girls have the heart and dedication any coach could ask for and I am thankful for being able to coach them.

B-team leading scorers:

Marley Walker 1pt                                                                                                                                                                Leilani Jimenez 1pt                                                                                                                                                        Modesty Foose 1pt

A-Team Leading scorers:

Emma Keith  4 pts                                                                                                                                                             Daphne Perez 2 pts                                                                                                                                                               Taylor Adams 1pt                                                                                                                                                                      Nicole Godines 1pt                                                                                                                                                          Diamond Smith 1 pt

8th Grade Girl's Basketball

Last night the 8th grade Lady Pirates were able to fly the W flag for both games.  The B team began the night by scoring 26 and beating Pleasanton 26 – 15.  The team had a one point lead after the first quarter but went on a 12 to 2 run in the second quarter to have a lead at half of 18 to 7.  Clarrissa Ybarra had her best quarter scoring 6 of her 12 points.  It was a team victory with all but two of the ladies scoring.  We only scored two points in the third quarter but were able to hold off the Eagles by limiting them to 2 points in the fourth quarter.  The scoring totals were Clarissa Y – 12 points, Alexia F and Neyda M. with 4 points, Marissa F, Jackie H and Layla M with 2 points apiece.  The B team record stands at 1 and 1 for the season.

Last week we beat Pearsall by one and this week we won with a last second three point shot by Noelia Medina to eek out a 28 – 26 victory.  We came out of the gate slow by letting the Eagles take an 8 point lead before we scored a basket.  We had the complete team this week and it helped to give the ladies rest and not lose skill.  The girls battled back to take a three point lead at the end of the first quarter, 11 – 8.  We had our poor quarter in the second scoring only a point.  With one minute left Pleasanton had a 26 -25 lead.  We got the ball back by the scorer’s table with 5 seconds left.  Noelia Medina was coming back from resting her knees last week and I asked her where she felt comfortable to shoot.  She set up by our bench on the three point line.  RoseCarlie Harold inbounded the ball to Danielle Esquibel and she made a great pass to Noelia.  It was a beautiful shot because I had a perfect vantage for the swish as time expired. The scoreboard says it all.

We were led in scoring by Danielle E. with 9, Morgan G and Clarissa R added 4, Alex N., Kylie M, Abby M, and Adrianna R added 2 apiece and of course the game winning shot by Noelia put her in the book with 3 points.

Coach's Note:  It was one of the most thrilling games I have had the privilege to coach.  Thank you to all the parents and fans who came out to see such excellent games.  The A team will take their perfect record to Devine to attempt to maintain perfection after Thanksgiving.  The 8th grade ladies and Coach Cameron and myself would like to wish everyone a restful Thanksgiving and a festive time with family.  I am very thankful for all the fine people I get to work with and all the students who trust me enough to share their lives with me.
